Made for Medicine

It’s hard to not be in awe of third-year student Kayleigh Maimone. From her work with Student Events Board, Zeta Tau Alpha and more, Kayleigh has made the most of her time here at Washington College. Setting sights on upcoming internships and beyond, Kayleigh’s passion for academics shines through.

 

Knowing she wanted to attend a small school, Kayleigh was drawn to WC’s close-knit community and strong academic departments; “I wanted a small school with a strong sense of community on campus. It was very important to me that there were opportunities for students to get involved and become leaders. I also wanted a strong pre-med program.”

 Kayleigh may have come to WC knowing she wanted to major in biology and minor in psychology but didn’t expect to develop a passion for Hispanic studies – later adding the discipline as an additional minor. “I did not realize that I wanted to minor in Hispanic studies. That was something I kind of figured out my first semester as a freshman. It’s definitely something I didn’t see myself doing, but it’s been a great learning experience, being able to improve my Spanish and then get to learn more about the culture.”

 During her time here Kayleigh has worked extensively in the campus community and with varying academic departments aiding in research and more. Prior to her time here at WC, she was involved in a program called ‘Women in Medicine’ hosted by Mercy Medical Center, where she was able to experience the different departments and positions within a medical care facility, which influenced her decision to want to attend medical school.

 Between the fall and spring semesters of her junior year, Kayleigh was an intern at Mercy Medical Center, where she aided with vaccine clinics and completed literature reviews for doctors. The opportunity to shadow different doctors and medical professionals throughout her collegiate career has solidified her desire to work in the medical profession and helped set course for her future following her graduation from WC.

 Looking towards her future, Kayleigh’s plans following graduation include volunteer work in the Mercy Volunteer Corps before attending medical school for her doctorate, ultimately hoping to work in neonatology and a NICU unit. Her work academics, extracurriculars and internship experiences have all lent themselves to helping her develop her voice, both personally and professionally.

 “Throughout my college career so far, I have become much more comfortable advocating for myself and the organizations in which I am involved. This is not something that comes easily to me, but I have been able to develop this skill and gain more confidence in myself.”
