Hillel House
Hillel is the heart of Jewish life on the Washington College campus.
Providing creative and engaging Jewish social and religious programming, promoting
community service and support for social causes, and maintaining an inclusive, welcoming
campus presence for Jewish and non-Jewish students alike are central to the mission
of Washington College’s Hillel. A student-run organization, Washington College Hillel
hosts formal and informal gatherings focusing on Jewish social and cultural issues,
supports community service initiatives, and provides opportunities to participate
in and learn about religious rites and celebrations. The goal of Hillel is to facilitate
our members to connect with and honor all facets of Jewish life, and to showcase these
for the greater Washington College community.
Washington College Hillel is based in the Roy P. and Nan Ans Hillel House, which is
adjacent to campus. Our spacious yet cozy home features a kosher kitchen, an extensive
library of cultural, historical, and religious texts, and a gathering space equally
well suited for casual student conversations and social gatherings as it is for hosting
lectures and campus-wide events. From Shabbat and High Holiday services in partnership
with Chestertown Havurah and dynamic guest lectures and presentations, to community
service activities and casual social engagements and outings, Washington College Hillel
provides social, cultural, academic and religious resources and support to a growing
and vibrant community of Jewish students and the broader Washington College community.
