An April Blooming with Events

Student ensembles, guest musicians, theatre performances, literary arts, business opportunities, athletics, and community planning.

With a variety of concerts and shows featuring both student and professional musicians this April, enjoy the prime season of the performing arts alongside students, staff, faculty, and local community members. This month is overflowing with opportunities for creative minds to engage in everything from a community planning conversation and startup business competition to a fiction reading and an experimental project performance.

 

eMusic Ensemble: Immersive Sound Installation & Multimedia Performance | directed by Professor Ken Schweitzer 

Become immersed in the interactive sonic and visual environment created as part of an experimental project comprising of two electronic musicians (David Londres '25 & Stevie Lyles '26) and one visual artist (Erin Helgerman ' 26) from Washington College. Starting at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, the public is invited to step into the atmosphere created by combining computers, synthesizers, projections, collages, and sculptures. At 8:30 p.m., an improvisatory performance will begin. The project will take place at 508 Washington Avenue. The event is free and open to the public. More info here.

 

Fiction Reading by Andrew Mozina 

Join fellow fiction readers and writers to welcome acclaimed author Andrew Mozina to the Rose O’Neill Literary House on Wednesday, April 9 at 6 p.m. Mozina is the author of two novels, Tandem (2023) and Contrary Motion (2016), and two short story collections: Quality Snacks (2014) and The Women Were Leaving the Men (2007). His fiction has appeared in Tin House, Southern Review, Ecotone, The Missouri Review, and elsewhere. More info here. 

 

Student Performances in Gibson Center for the Arts | Washington College Music Department 

Experience the energy and rhythm of the genre at the Jazz Combo performance directed by Professor Josh Mlodzianowski on Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Hotchkiss Recital Hall. 

Support student pannists at the Steel Pan Ensemble show directed by Professor John Leupold on Monday, April 28 at 7:30pm in Decker Auditorium. 

Plug in for an electric evening with the Rock Ensemble on Wednesday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Decker Auditorium. 

On Wednesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Hotchkiss Recital Hall, prepare for an entertaining and awe-evoking vocal performance at the Chorus & Cabaret concert, directed by J. Ernest Green. 

Celebrate the incredible talents of Washington College's most exceptional students and ensembles at the Music Department Student Solo and Ensemble Honors Concert on Monday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in Hotchkiss Recital Hall

 

“Where I’m Coming From,” a Music Composition SCE

An hour-long anthology film featuring unique music videos, “Where I’m Coming From” includes covers and original compositions by David Londres ‘25. With some help from other student musicians, Londres recorded, edited, and mixed the content and music for his project, and will perform his work on Friday, April 11 at 7:30pm in Decker Auditorium. 

 

Concert Series: Wonmi Kim (Piano) 

Renowned pianist Wonmi Kim, who has performed in many major musical concerts and has belonged to esteemed orchestras around the world, will be performing in Decker Auditorium on Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. More info here.

 

Witness Innovation in Action: Upper Shore STRT1UP Roadshow 

Business-minded residents of the Eastern Shore are invited to Martha Washington Square on Washington College’s campus for an exciting showcase of regional entrepreneurship at the 2025 Upper Shore STRT1UP Roadshow. On Tuesday, April 15 from 2:30 - 6 p.m., entrepreneurs from Cecil, Kent, and Queen Anne’s counties will  compete for start-up investments, participate in panels, and engage in business discussions.. Learn @ Lunch | Main Street Chestertown’s Strategic Plan with Sonia Huntzinger  

All who live in and love Chestertown are encouraged to attend lunch in Hynson Lounge in Hodson Hall Commons on Wednesday, April 16 at 12 p.m to learn from Executive Director of Main Street Chestertown, Sonia Huntzinger, about the recently-released Phase 1 Downtown Master Plan.  The plan can be viewed on the Main Street website should there be an interest in viewing it prior to the presentation. The cost of the event to WC-ALL members, instructors, and faculty, staff, and students is $25 and general admission costs $30. Register online and learn more here. 

 

The Revolutionists by Lauren Gunderson | directed by Professor LaRonika Thomas  

All community members are invited to experience Gunderson’s irreverent, girl-powered comedy that is set during the French Revolution's Reign of Terror. The Revolutionists shares the stories of historical figures including playwright Olympe de Gouges, political assassin Charlotte Cordaym, former queen Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle. The performance will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday – Saturday April 17, 18, and 19 in Tawes Theatre, Gibson Center for the Arts. Tickets and showtimes available here.  

 

Senior Reading  

Say goodbye to writers from the class of 2025 who will be reading from their original works, and celebrate the winners of the Genre Prize, Pfister Poetry Prize, and Warner Prize, which will be announced at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23rd in the Rose O’Neill Literary House. More info here.  

 

War on the Shore Alumni & Parent Tailgate and Pre-Game Walk 

Pull up and prepare for an unforgettable evening as the Shoremen take on Salisbury University in one of collegiate lacrosse’s greatest rivalries. Eat, chat, and cheer at the tailgate from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25. Right before the big game, show your support for the Shoreman by walking on the field.

 

Spring Orchestra & Symphonic Band Concert, featuring Hiram Diaz 

An educator and accomplished musician, the versatile soloist Hiram Diaz will perform on Sunday, April 27 along with an orchestral performance directed by Kimberly McCollum and a symphonic band performance directed by Luci Disano. The concert will be held at 5 p.m. in Hotchkiss Recital Hall, Gibson Center for the Arts. More info here.
