Sophia Rooks is the Assistant Technical Director and the Event Coordinator for the Gibson Center for the Arts, working closely with the Department of Theatre and Dance and the Department of Music, as well as Campus Events and Conference Services She handles the room reservations for the event spaces in the building, oversees event set-up, clean-up, and staffing, and assists in the scene shop, where she build sets for theatrical productions and trains new Scene Shop Assistants

Sophia is a graduate from Washington College, class of 2023. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in both Theatre and Environmental Studies. Her Environmental Studies Senior Capstone Experience (SCE) was an in-depth research study on LED theatrical lighting and how its implementation in

Gibson theatres would decrease the College’s Carbon Footprint. For theatre, she completed a playwrighting SCE, adapting the book Grendel by John Gardner. Sophia also produced the production and it was performed in Tawes Theatre last April. While a student, Sophia was a Presidential scholar, the recipient of the Warner Prize for Writing on the Environment, and was a Sophie Kerr finalist for her play, Grendel.

Currently, Sophia serves as the Assistant Technical Director for the theatrical performances this semester and is beginning her work as Stage Manager on The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, a lighting SCE by Matt Brader in Spring 2024. She also serves as a volunteer woman’s rowing coach for WC’s novice team, bringing her invaluable experience as a rower for 11 years to the team. Sophia continues to write plays, and hopefully will direct one soon.
