After Washington College
Students of economics go on to do many different things after college. Alumni from our department have entered into the business world, gone to graduate school, worked in non-profits, have volunteered in the Peace Corps, and have worked for the government.
Because many students do not know what they want to do after college, the Department encourages students to experience life outside the classroom through internship programs such as The Washington Center. Students oftentimes find this to be an enlightening experience, helping them to plan their life after college.
Finding a job
Most students use the College’s Career Center to help them find a job. Alumni from the last few years can be found working in consulting firms, the high-tech industries, and the banking industry, to name just a few places. The US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics has this information about being an economist.
Non-profit organizations
Some students choose to work for non-profit organizations. Non-profit organizations typically are advocacy groups that advocate on behalf of the environment, women’s rights, education, tax policy, and a wealth of other issues. Non-profits can be liberal, conservative, or independent so there is something for everyone out there.
Government
Many people like to work for the government because of the proximity to actual policy making. Many people feel they can have a more direct effect if they work for the lawmakers or agencies that make rules. For instance, you can work in the Senate or House of Representatives working for an individual member or a committee. There are, of course, many agencies that work directly with issues that many students are concerned with. The ultimate place to find jobs in the government is from the USAJobs website.
Graduate school
For some highly motivated students graduate school is their chosen future. They study economics, business, public planning, the law, and many other things. Recent alumni have attended University of Rochester, George Mason University, Brandeis University, and the University of Delaware. If you are thinking of going to graduate, law, or business school you must prepare for and take the required entrance exams.
Graduate schools require applicants to take the Graduate Record Examination. If you are thinking of going to graduate school any of Economics faculty are more than happy to talk with you about it so do not hesitate to contact us.
Law schools require applicants to register with the Law School Data Assembly Service and take the Law School Admissions Test. Students thinking of going to law school should also be sure to talk with the College’s law school advisor.
If you are considering getting an MBA, you must take the Graduate Management Assessment Test. Feel free to contact the members of the department of Business Management, many of whom have MBAs.
