It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our colleague and friend, Andy Helms, who passed away in November, 2017.  Andy was a valued member of the Washington College community – an inspiring teacher, committed scholar and wonderful colleague who was devoted to his department and contributed much to the College. He will be deeply missed by the Washington College faculty and staff and all of the students who knew him.

 Andy came to Washington College in 2008. He taught introductory and intermediate microeconomics and courses in his specialty, urban economics. His work was published in the Journal of Urban Economics and Regional Science and Urban Economics and was widely cited; he also consulted on economics education for McGraw-Hill publishers. Andy was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor in 2013 and he served as chair of the Department of Economics beginning in Fall 2015.  Andy also served on the Honor Board and was secretary of the faculty, two demanding positions in which he contributed to the education and development of students and served the faculty with detailed minutes of each faculty meeting.

 Andy earned his B.S. in economics from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1995 and his M.S. and Ph.D in economics from the University of Illinois in 1997 and 2002, where he held the Paul W. Boltz Fellowship in his last two years of graduate work.
