Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at Washington College is dedicated to providing an innovative curriculum that reflects modern, interdisciplinary science. Our organic-first curriculum is accredited by the American Chemical Society and Maryland Higher Education Commission. We are leading the way in a national movement to integrate the principles of green chemistry into the undergraduate curriculum and to train a new generation of chemists who are especially mindful of the environmental impact of conventional chemistry research.
Our faculty provide learning opportunities inside the classroom and the lab and in the field, getting you familiar with collecting and analyzing data with research grade instrumentation.
The department offers both a major and a minor, and feeds into the neuroscience and biochemistry and molecular biology majors; museum, field, and community education minor; and the teacher certification and pre-health professions programs. The department also contributes classes for the first-year seminar (FYS) program, distribution courses for nonscience majors, introductory level courses, and diverse upper-level courses for majors. Undergraduate research opportunities are available in departmental laboratories.

Chemistry Major
We introduce our students to fundamental concepts in chemistry through the lens of organic and biochemistry, which allows us to introduce material thematically, gives students the foundation needed for advanced study across scientific fields, and better reflects modern chemistry as an interdisciplinary science.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Major
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) is the study of biology on a small scale, with a focus on ongoing processes within cells. The major provides a comprehensive education at the intersection between biology and chemistry, and Washington College nurtures independent scientists in a rapidly advancing field.

Neuroscience Major
The Neuroscience Major is an interdisciplinary approach to studying the brain. With contributing programming from the psychology, biology, and chemistry departments, students majoring in neuroscience understand the physical, psychological, and social networks that create behaviors, memories, and consciousness.
