Student Opportunities

International Studies majors must complete one approved experiential learning activity—a meaningful education experience related to international studies outside of the classroom—in addition to the required semester-abroad experience. We believe it is important for students to apply the theories and concepts that they have learned in “real-world” settings. Internships, an additional study abroad experience, model programs, and volunteer activities are all possible experiential learning activities.

Internships

  • Compete for an internship in the U.S. State Department. Our students have secured internships at U.S. Embassies across the world.
  • Complete an internship at our partner, the Washington Center, in Washington, D.C., working with a federal government, political, or non-profit agency.
  • Arrange your own internship experience through your own connections, or by tapping into the Center for Career Development’s extensive network.

Research

  • Complete a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE). There are two options for the SCE: writing a research thesis paper or completing a self-designed research project. All SCEs will be presented during a symposium.
  • Visit with working professionals like journalists, political activists, foreign policy analysts, diplomats, military commanders, and government officials of national and international stature through the Goldstein Program in Public Affairs.
  • Participate in a conference with respected leaders and engage in dialogue on foreign policy and international affairs. Students annually attend the Student Symposium sponsored by the Center for the Study of the Presidency and the West Point Student Conference on United States Affairs (SCUSA), and the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN), designed for women.
  • Gain greater understanding of the world through a study abroad or another independent international trip.
  • Create your own research project. Support, financial or otherwise, is available across campus, including through the Hodson Collaborative Research Program or the Cater Society for Junior Fellows.

To get started thinking about what research you might be able to do at Washington College, review our faculty’s areas of expertise.
