Student Opportunities
Expand your skills, and social circle, by pursing your interests outside the classroom. Participate in internships, research, clubs and other organizations, and more on campus, in the wider community, and abroad.
Find the Perfect Opportunity

Internships
- Language skills are useful at home and abroad. Secure an internship internationally, in Washington, D.C., or at a local nonprofit, giving back to your community.
- Arrange your own internship experience through your own connections, or by tapping into the Center for Career Development’s extensive network.

Research
- Complete a Senior Capstone Experience (SCE) combining language learning and research. The SCE is, traditionally, a research paper in the language. The process culminates with an oral defense in that language, proving your writing, listening, and speaking skills.
- Research the cultures of countries speaking the language you’re learning. Cultural competency is an incredibly important part of communication and helps you avoid faux pas.
- Attend a conference and present components from a paper you’ve written, including your SCE.
- Create your own research project. Support, financial or otherwise, is available across campus, including through the Hodson Collaborative Research Program or the Cater Society for Junior Fellows.
To get started thinking about what research you might be able to do at Washington College, review our faculty’s areas of expertise.

Get Involved
Build your résumé and expand your social circle simultaneously by joining clubs, honor societies, and more that help you connect with folks with similar interests.
- Participate in festivals and parties with your classmates and the campus community. Singing, dancing, eating, fashion shows and more help connect students with each other and the cultures being celebrated. These events are often open to the community, including local high school students, giving Washington College students the opportunity to share what they have learned.
- Attend speaker lectures, workshops, and excursions relevant to language and culture.
